A Local's Guide to Trivia Night

Trivia in Placer County, ranked and explained.

Trivia night is one of those things you either love or you actively resent. There's no middle ground. The good teams take it seriously, the chill teams come for the drinks, and there's always one team that named themselves something inappropriate that the host reads out loud anyway.

If you live in Placer County and you're looking for the right spot, here's the rundown.

What Makes a Good Trivia Night

There are really only three things that matter:

  • A host who knows what they're doing. Energy matters. A flat host kills a room.
  • Real prizes. Not a $5 gift certificate. Something worth winning.
  • Food and drinks worth being there for even if you lose. Because most teams lose.

Brick & Barrel — Thursday Nights, 6:30 PM

We're obviously biased but here's what makes our trivia night work:

  • Free to play. No buy-in, no minimum order. Bring your team.
  • Real prize vouchers. 15% off your next visit for 1st place. 10% for 2nd. 5% for 3rd.
  • Happy hour spills over. 2–5 PM happy hour ends and trivia starts at 6:30. Some teams just camp out.
  • No sign-up. Walk in, grab a table, get scoresheets at the bar.

Unwritten Rules

Things nobody will tell you but every trivia regular knows:

  1. Show up by 6:15. Tables fill fast. Don't lose your seat.
  2. No phones. Obviously. But also: don't be the team that argues with the host. They have the answer key.
  3. Pick a team name that's clever, not crude. The host has to read it out loud. Be funny, not awful.
  4. Bring 3–5 people max. Bigger teams aren't better — coordination falls apart over 5.
  5. Order food early. Kitchen slows during rounds. Get your order in before round 2.
  6. Tip your host. They're working a room, holding energy, and dealing with the inevitable drunk arguer. Tip them.

What to Order Mid-Trivia

You want stuff that's easy to share, doesn't require attention, and doesn't get cold fast:

  • Pizzas — obvious. Order two larges and the table's set for the night.
  • Wings — the perfect trivia food. Pick a few sauces.
  • Build-Your-Own Mac — one big bowl in the middle, everyone forks in.
  • A pitcher of house brew — for the table. Cheaper than individual.

Other Spots in the Area

Other places run trivia too — some weekly, some monthly. Worth checking out if you want variety. But if you want a Thursday night routine with real prizes and zero pretension, we'll save your team a table.
